CLINIC DESCRIPTIONS

En Guard: Cornerstone of Success

The ability to assume a proper en guard position and maintain it throughout fencing is essential for success in the game. Simply put, en guard is the beginning of every fencing action; the foundation on which a fencer’s entire game is built. This workshop will tear down your en guard and re-build it for maximum effectiveness through a series of drills, feedback, and exercises. Please note- this workshop will not have a fencing component – the whole time will be spent perfecting this essential skill!

Recommended for all ages. Must be a current RIFAC fencer in an Advanced Class, or on the Club Team or National Team level.

The Fencer’s Edge: Mental Toughness (Workshop and Team Event):

Trying to succeed as a competitor without a mental toughness program is like trying to run hardware from a faulty computer. For fencers, our computer is our brain, and our hardware is our technique. To conquer fencing, you must conquer both!

This three-hour workshop will be comprised of two sections: a one-hour lecture with exercises to establish a mental toughness understanding and personal program; and a two-hour team event, during which time participants will use and fine-tune their new techniques, with feedback.

Recommended for all ages. Must be a current RIFAC fencer in an Advanced Class, or on the Club Team or National Team level.

Youth/Junior Medieval Italian Longsword:

Join Coach Alex for an introduction to the medieval Italian longsword martial-arts system of Fiore from his 1410 manuscript! In this workshop, participants will learn how to hold the steel longsword and wield it properly, and practice attacks, blocks, and footwork while learning the history of this amazing fighting system. Explore the origins of modern fencing moves!

Youth: Recommended for ages 11-15. Junior: Recommended for ages 12-18. No fencing experience required.

Youth Medieval Italian Dagger:

Learn the basics of medieval Italian dagger fighting from the manuscript of Fiore from 1410! Learn how to use the medieval “every-person” weapon. The workshop will cover the history of the weapon, how to hold, and basic offense and defense from this martial-arts system. Equipment provided.

Recommended for ages 11-15. No fencing experience required.

Flicks and Other Cool Tricks:

Covering as many exciting actions as we can fit in, Flicks and Cool Moves will introduce the proper flick (whip-over hits that land on the back of the opponent) technique and how to use them in a bout. We will also cover in-fighting (close distance fencing), as well as jumping actions and high-speed moves!

Recommended for all ages. Must be a current RIFAC fencer in an Advanced Class, or on the Club Team or National Team level.
